A recent poll finds that Canadian consumers want the fish and seafood they consume to come from sustainable sources

Toronto – Recent research has found that Canadians feel strongly about the fish they consume and where it comes from.

In fact 91 per cent of them want their fish and other seafood to come from sustainable and non-overfished sources.

But at the same time, reports WWF Canada, only eight per cent of consumers feel they have enough information to make informed decisions about the fish and seafood they buy.

WWF Canada released the results of this latest poll, conducted by EKOS Research Associates, this month.

More findings

Other findings from the poll include:

• 63 per cent of consumers have heard of the term “sustainable seafood;”
• 11 per cent of those surveyed purchase sustainable seafood every time or almost every time they shop; 21 per cent do so at least once a month;
• 65 per cent of Canadians look to retailers and producers for information about where seafood comes from; 33 per cent look to government or government agencies; 24 per cent to environmental non-profit organizations; and
• Canadians cite availability and concerns about authenticity as the most significant barriers to purchasing sustainable seafood (72 per cent each); cost is a relatively unimportant factor with less than two-thirds of respondents citing it as a barrier.
