Day4 sells tech to Dutch solar cell manufacturer

VANCOUVER: Day4 Energy Inc. is supplying technology and equipment to a Dutch manufacturer of solar modules that is upgrading its 25-megawatt production facility in Kerkrade.
Solar Modules Nederland’s (SMN’s) products will be manufacturing Day4 DNA solar photovoltaic (PV) products under license.
Vancouver-based Day4, a global provider solar technology, said the upgrades to the plant are to begin immediately with production commencing in mid-July.
No financial details were provided.
The Day4 DNA PV cell does not require soldering and according to Day4, it virtually eliminates PV cell energy losses after module lamination.
Based on work-smart technology, the modules reduce the effects of shading on performance by incorporating independent operating segments. If one is shaded, the other eight continue working.
On June 14, Day4 reported a net loss for the quarter of $7 million, compared to a $1.9 million loss during the same period last year. Revenues shrank nearly 17.6% to $18.9 million.
The company said demand for its technology weakened during the quarter because of uncertainty surrounding the Italian government’s feed-in tariff subsidy program.
“There is little doubt that the first half of 2011 is shaping up to become one of the most challenging periods in the history of our industry,” said Day4 president George Rubin in statement.
“As a result of the Italian market essentially being frozen for a number of months, inventory levels climbed across the (photovoltaic) value chain while material and product prices experienced a significant decline from late 2010 levels.”
He said the operating results reflect the challenges Day4 and the rest of the industry faced over the last few months.
