VANCOUVER: Port Metro Vancouver has released its first annual sustainability report, called The Way Forward. The report highlights key social, financial and environmental achievements and milestones, said the port. The document was also prepared in keeping with the Global Reporting Initiative’s sustainability reporting guidelines.

Some of the report’s highlights include:

2010 was the first full year of shore power for cruise ships at Canada Place; The port contributed $311,000 to community events and charities through its community investment program, including nearly $20,000 in post-secondary scholarships; The port’s air emissions reduction program earned the ecoFREIGHT Sustainable Transportation Award at the 2010 GLOBE Conference; andPort Metro Vancouver became the first port authority in Canada to issue a rated, private placement bond, supported by a Standard & Poor’s AA credit rating.

“Reporting on our performance is one way we can be more transparent about our efforts and this report establishes a benchmark on which we can build even further,” said Robin Silvester, president and CEO of Port Metro Vancouver. “This first sustainability report marks a solid beginning of measurable improvements, starting with our head office, where in 2010 we were carbon neutral for the first time in the port’s history.”
