OTTAWA: The Port of Oshawa has undergone an administrative restructuring.

The port, which had until today, been operated by the Harbour Commission in Canada, is now under the direction of a Canadian Port Authority (CPA).

Federal minister of finance, Jim Flaherty and Dr. Colin Carrie, parliamentary secretary to the minister of health and MP for Oshawa, made the announcement.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Transportation, “the transition to port authority status will allow the port to more fully pursue commercial opportunities, while taking into account input from port users and other stakeholders such as the local community”.

Oshawa was the only port in Canada running under the Harbour Commission’s mandate. The change in status is designed to “allow the port to more fully pursue commercial opportunities, while taking into account input from port users and other stakeholders such as the local community,” according to the same statement.

The port is located on the eastern edge of the Greater Toronto Area and can accommodate any size or type of vessel entering the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System.
