PVC industry takes up new sustainability goals
Europe’s PVC industry is developing a sustainability commitment for the next 10 years
Europe’s plastics industry has set new targets to reduce the environmental impact of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Producers have signed on to a new program called VinylPlus
VinylPlus. It aims —over the next 10 years— to improve PVC recycling rates, advance new technologies, reduce emissions and promote the use of raw materials and renewable energy.
More concrete targets include recycling 800,000 tonnes of PVC annually by 2020 and ensuring 100,000 tonnes of the material are treated by innovative technologies.
The industry is also planning to introduce a new VinylPlus certification and labelling scheme to help users identify PVC that is produced under sustainable guidelines.
VinylPlus was developed with The Natural Step (TNS), an international NGO.
“People making procurement decisions generally welcome the chance to make better choices and to see suppliers responding actively to their needs and the sustainability standards they are working towards,” said David Cook, TNS Executive Ambassador.
The industry will publish an independently verified and audited report outlining the progress made against each of its targets.
Josef Ertl, chairman of VinylPlus, said that while the program is based on self-regulation, its goals won’t be possible without the proper waste management and green procurement policies.
