While the scale of impact caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan remains to be measured, good news is that the disaster has so far caused little to no impact to the operations of many of the Japanese machine tool companies.According to the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake Machine Tool Facilities Damage Situation survey on 19 production facilities comparatively near the earthquake source in Tohoku and the Chuetsu region, conducted by the Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA), as of March 14, only one person was reported injured, none killed or missing, six factory buildings damaged (including minor damages), and one machine damaged.Mori Seiki says in a notice posted on its website that all its related employees and families are safe, and only minor damages are seen in its Chiba and Isehara sites.Yamazaki Mazak confirms that no employees or their family members were injured in the disaster and only its Sendai Technology Center and the Tsukuba Technology Center received minor damages.Mitsui Seiki says they did not experience any loss or injury to its personnel and the factory damage was not serious.

MONTREAL: The Montreal Port Authority, CN and the two companies operating the port’s key container terminals have reached agreements focusing on supply chain efficiencies. The first agreement was signed by CN, the port authority and Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership (MGT), which operates the CAST and RACINE terminals.
