The Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan recently announced to add machine tools and automotive parts and components, among a total of nine industries, to the list of industries under potential threats of trade liberalization.Consequently, the industries will be given active assistance to increase self production of critical parts and components.In June 2010, China and Taiwan signed the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), a preferential trade agreement aimed to reduce tariffs and commercial barriers between the two sides. Despite that Taiwanese-made metal products, dies and molds and machine tools are included in the “early harvest” list, under the sunset clauses, the tax reduction benefits will end when Taiwan’s exports of these products in the “early harvest” list to China becomes out of control.According to analysis, this is why the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan tries to help manufacturers increase their self production of critical parts through means such as special subsidies and industry research alliance.
